1970 Also. Choose a work of recognized literary merit in which a specific inanimate object (e.g., a seashell, a handkerchief, a painting) is important, and write an essay in which you show how two or three of the purposes the object serves are related to one another.
In the book A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray, the main character has a necklace in the shape of a crescent eye that was given to her by her mother. In the opening chapters of the book, she and several other girls use the necklace to slice open their thumbs and become blood sisters. They didn't know that the crescent eye was a symbol of an ancient order and that they were mimicking the formation centuries later. The eye is also used as a key in later books, opening doors to other realms, as well as sealing them. The fact that the necklace was sort of like a key when it came to locking the girls together as blood sisters as well as locking the door to the realm was a very clever idea.

Anna, you chose a great article that provides you with many leads for your close reading, however you don't take advantage of this. You should begin your essay with an introductory paragraph to enlighten your audience before you jump right in. After you introduce your topic, then you can include your favorite quotes. Your essay is also lacking structure. It's important to have a well organized essay so your reader can follow along easily. Separate your ideas into different paragraphs; include a topic sentence, a claim, and support. Also make sure you include how the use of the author's techniques effect the audience. By doing this, it will show that you understood the reaction the author was intending.

Sorry, somehow my comment from anoter post ended up here.
ReplyDeleteFor this prompt, you need to select a literary merit to analyze. You do follow the prompt by stating three different purposes the object serves as, but you don't support your claims. You prove that the object is symbolic by summarizing different scenes in the book. To create a strong essay, try to incorporate text straight from the book. If you include direct quotations it will allow for your audience to establish their own opinion, instead of hearing it through your words. Overall, good work
This is a great start to your essay, but it needs a little bit more. Try to add more explanation and specific examples as you talk about each purpose of the necklace. A good structure with a few paragraphs that explain each purpose as well as how they come together would also be helpful. Also, maybe separating the prompt from the rest of the essay would be good (I got a bit confused for a second there XD)
ReplyDeleteI definately agree with Caitlyn about separating your response from the prompt. I also think you need to add more explanation. I know it is important to avoid too much summarization but I think a little more is needed. You also need to add more "so what" to you analysis of the three purposes. I do not think you need to have quoted evidence as you will not be able to do so in the exam. Great start just needs more expansion.
