Course Response #1 (September 9)
The main thing that suck with me this week is how very very many vocabulary words there are. I still don't understand why we have to learn all of them, except to sound conceited and snooty. I'd far prefer to say "surprise ending" than "paraprosdokian". It's much simpler and quicker to say, as well as far more understandable. But I guess teachers can't let everything be all fun and games, and we actually have to learn something. It was really helpful to play the games, even though there were so many words that it was difficult to process them all at once. It would have been better to do it in smaller groups as well, because quieter people like myself couldn't get a word in edgewise when it came to trying to answer.

I don't think the vocab words are useless. At least some of them will show up on AP test and I find useful, at least the ones I know, to describe a sentence. If you feel like you don't get to answer as much, you could always take the initiative of being the person who is at the smart board, or you could also practice on your own. Another thing you might want to do is check your spelling. I don't think "suck with me" is proper, unless that is some intended pun that I don't see.
ReplyDeleteYou did a thorough job showing your reaction to the vocabulary. However, you did not mention any of the other material and make connections between the material.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great analysis of your reaction to the vocabulary we had to learn over the summer, but what about Foster or "Me Talk Pretty One Day". Those both were important assignments that would have been good to focus on to take off some of the negative tone (unless that's what you wanted to get through of course). This is good for the vocabulary however, you gave examples and reasons as well as ways to fix what didn't work for you. I agree that smaller groups would have been better in class, but I'm not sure how that would have worked given there's only one smart board. The vocab doesn't make people sound "conceited and snooty" if you're using them in the context of literary analysis, it makes it sound like you know what you're talking about and so should be respected. It would sound conceited if you just went around to everyday conversation and started analyzing how people were talking in the hallways. Just remember that context is everything.
